A Mentors Story

Rostrevor Baptist Church Mentor Impact Story

In this wonderful story from Rostrevor Baptist Church the COACH Coordinator Michelle introduces us to Julia, who has been a COACH Mentor since 2014.

Julia shares how amongst the people she has mentored, were 2 women who came to Australia as immigrants and had fled domestic violence. Creating a relationship of trust and then empowering these women to achieve the practical goal of learning to drive and get their licence was part of the special journey that she took with each of them.

“I joined the COACH team in 2014 and worked with two women, both with similar stories. They were migrants and victims of domestic violence, abandoned after arriving in the country. As a mentor, my role was to align with their goals, identify their needs, and build a relationship of trust.”

Mentoring in Action:

“One of their goals was to get their driver’s licenses. One mentee had trouble with her driving tests, repeatedly failing, which frustrated her. I stepped in, spoke with her driving instructor, and asked why she kept failing. After our conversation, she passed her next test. I think she just needed someone to advocate for her.”

Transformation and God’s Presence:

“Both mentees have experienced God’s work in their lives. One shared a profound moment when she cried out to God in despair while sitting on a jetty. She told me that shortly afterward, I entered her life, which felt like an answer to her prayer. With support and guidance, both mentees have flourished. They now have jobs, transportation, and homes they’ve purchased—remarkable progress from their dark beginnings.”

Personal Growth and Blessings:

“For me, being part of these women’s lives has been one of the most life-changing privileges. Our relationship has grown into a deep friendship, with trust at its core. God has taught me that blessings often come from unexpected places. Although we invest time and effort into mentoring, God has a way of blessing us in return. There is immense joy in witnessing someone take positive steps in life, knowing that you’ve been a part of their journey.”

Encouragement for Future Mentors:

“If you’re considering becoming a COACH mentor, I encourage you to take action. This journey will not only bless your mentee but also bless you in ways you can’t imagine.”
